When I moved to an apartment in 2015 where I couldn't put in a water filter on the sink, I had to do some research... and I found the Berkey water filter!! It has now become the only water filter I recommend. Berkey offers some of the most revolutionary charcoal water filters and it takes no power to filter the water since it works from gravity! So I want to explain a bit more about its benefits.

Why did I buy a Berkey Water Filter?

My interest in clean water started in 2013 when I started questioning more about the water we were drinking on a daily basis. Los Angeles tap water isn't known for being the cleanest, and I drink a lot of water! So I wanted to feel more confident about the water I was drinking and started researching to find the best solution for me - one that was affordable, portable and removed all the heavy metals, viruses, and other contaminants efficiently... and all roads lead to the Berkey water filter.

Berkey Filters are gravity filters, meaning they use the force of gravity to feed water through the filter from the top chamber to the bottom chamber. There are no moving parts or electricity required.

All of the models except for the Berkey Light are stainless steel construction (which means no plastic!!).

How long does a Berkey filter last?

Each Black Berkey Purification Element is designed to purify approximately 3,000 gallons of water before needing to be replaced. A set of two elements will last approximately 6,000 gallons of water before needing replacement. If you have a two filter Big Berkey and you used 5 gallons of water per day, then you have 1,200 days the filters will last. That’s over 3 years!

What I Love About Having a Berkey Water Filter

  • The water tastes so FRESH. It tastes clean. I was surprised at the filter power it has from a seemingly simple system.

  • It's highly cost effective.

  • It has an additional filter that can remove fluoride.

  • It can filter out food coloring! It is so powerful it can remove food coloring from water without removing the beneficial minerals your body needs. Also, the red food coloring test can be used at anytime to know that the filters have not exhausted their filtering ability.

  • If the power goes out... I still have clean water!

  • I can take it with me anywhere. It's totally portable if I move.

For starters, the little Brita or Pur filters you get at the store don’t remove harmful pathogens, nor do they completely remove many of the herbicides, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and other harmful contaminants (ex: LEAD) that the Berkey does. Store filters can reduce them but not eliminate them. You can get all of the info and see various side-by-side comparisons via this page. Because the Berkey can remove these contaminants it’s considered a water purifier and not just a filter.

Considerations for the Berkey Water Filter

I bought the Travel Berkey because I live alone and it's the perfect size for me, but there are sizes for everyone!

I go through at least two tank everyday, so I probably could have opted for the Big Berkey, but so far this is working for me!

If you’re looking for a trustworthy product that will filter even the dirtiest water leaving clean, purified water that tastes the same every time, then get a Berkey. I use mine to make coffee, tea, soups, and more and have been able to taste a difference, but further more, my mind has been put at ease.
